The Art of Scent
and Light:
Our Collaboration
with Kate Mitchell

Few artists capture the dance between light and colour quite like Kate Mitchell. Her bold, expressive glassware celebrates the beauty found in everyday moments.

As we mark two decades of reimagining daily rituals, we sat down with Kate to talk about her start in the glass industry, the joy of colour, and the making of our special 20th anniversary collaboration.

Conversation with Kate

We’d love to start by hearing how your journey with glass began. What first drew you to the art form, and was it something you always saw yourself pursuing?

I actually stumbled into glass by accident while studying Fine Arts at university. As part of my course research I visited Luke Jacomb Studio, a casting and blowing studio, and was instantly captivated by the process. I was lucky enough to start working there not long after, and eleven years later, I’m still in the same studio. It’s been an incredible space to grow, experiment, and develop my own personal work and practice.

Your work is instantly recognisable for its bold use of colour - from confetti tumblers to speckled vases. What draws you to vibrant tones, and what role does colour play in shaping your creative process?

Colour is always the starting point for me. I love how it can completely change the mood or story of a piece. I’m drawn to vibrant tones because they feel alive, playful and full of personality. I like to think of my work as capturing moments of joy and spontaneity, and colour is how I express that energy.

Your pieces often become part of people’s daily lives. How does it feel knowing your work can create small moments of joy every day?

It’s honestly the best part of what I do. Knowing that something I’ve made becomes part of someone’s morning ritual like holding their water or catching the light on their table, that’s really special.

"Colour is always the starting point for me. I love how it can completely change the mood or story of a piece."

When you start a new piece, what sparks your creative process - a colour, a material, a story?

It usually begins with a colour or pattern that catches my eye and inspires me. Sometimes it’s as simple as a flower I’ve seen on a walk or a great colour combination in fashion. Other times, it’s a collaboration that challenges me to see my work through a new lens.

Glassblowing is such a fascinating craft. What’s something people might be surprised to learn about the process or the industry?

People are often surprised by how physical it is. It’s hot, heavy, and very fast-paced. You’re constantly balancing heat, timing, and movement.

October marks 20 years of Ashley & Co., and it was such a pleasure to work with you on this collaboration to celebrate. What did this partnership mean to you?

Ashley & Co. is a brand I’ve admired for a long time, and my mum has been a huge fan for years so there was something quite personal about creating for you. It feels like a full-circle moment, combining my glass practice with a brand that’s always been part of our home life.

Did this collaboration with Ashley & Co. inspire you to try anything new or different in your practice?

Yes, it did. It encouraged me to experiment with different colour applications and transparencies to create softer, more natural tones with an earthy feel. I focused on how subtle layering could change the overall mood of a piece and bring a more relaxed, organic quality to the work.

Ashley & Co. has always been about reimagining everyday rituals. What are some rituals that ground or inspire you in your own life or glassblowing practice?

Morning coffee is a big one! That quiet start to the day before the furnace gets roaring. I also find rhythm in the repetitive parts of glassmaking, gathering, turning, shaping, it’s almost meditative.

And finally, what are you most excited to explore next in your glass practice?

I’m really interested in expanding into lighting and other home pieces like artworks — pieces that are less about function and more about form and beauty.
